It feels like your emotions are running the show
Therapy for teens and adults who struggle with intense emotions and a deep fear of abandonment. That includes borderline personality disorder (BPD), traits of it, and patterns you don’t need a label for.
Offering in-person therapy sessions in Hewlett, NY, Northern NJ or virtual online therapy across NY, NJ, FL, and VT.
You’ve probably seen other therapists before…
At Summer Day Therapy we are rarely the first therapist our clients have seen. Most have been in therapy since childhood, and a fair number have tried tools like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Some are still scarred by past therapy experiences not working out the way they’d hoped.
When therapy hasn’t worked before, it may be because the skills were handed over without anyone showing you how they fit your actual life. Here's what's different about how we work:
We never teach a skill without working out how you’d actually use it, in the specific situations you need it for.
We’ll give you the validation you need and deserve, and still tell you the truth.
For a lot of clients, their Summer Day therapist is the only person in their life willing to be honest with them, instead of tiptoeing around them. That’s what makes real change possible.
Nothing we do is off a script. If a skill doesn’t fit your life, we don’t use it.
Some clients come in with a BPD diagnosis or suspicions they might have some borderline traits. Others don’t care much for labels; they just want to feel better and more in control. Wherever you’re starting from, the work is built around you.
“Shira is extremely wise, insightful, and thoughtful in understanding her clients, and she collaborates with clients and families to facilitate growth and improve overall happiness and well-being. She is fantastic!!”

If any of this sounds familiar, you’re in the right place.
You lose your temper faster than you mean to, and you spend a long time afterward going over what you said or did.
You’re always bracing for your friends or romantic partners to leave you. You may even sabotage your relationships to protect yourself against what feels inevitable.
You can’t seem to talk yourself out of texting again and again when someone hasn’t answered you.
You might be able to compose yourself at work, but fall apart at home.
Or, maybe finding and keeping a job has been a struggle because you have frequent outbursts and difficulty getting along with coworkers and employers.
